Things got particularly exciting at the Mini Würzburg holiday programme, where 25 curious children stepped back into the past during our archaeology activity. Together with archaeologist Martin Straßburger from Rubicon Archäologie, they learned all about the work archaeologists do and how we uncover and understand the past.
The children listened closely to the stories and were amazed when they had the opportunity to handle finds from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods, Roman tiles and a variety of other historical objects for themselves.
But listening was only the beginning. Just like real archaeologists, the children examined the contents of finds bags, drew their discoveries and enthusiastically presented their favourite objects to the group. They investigated, discovered and explored, bringing history to life in a very hands-on way.
To finish the session, there was one final surprise: every child received a certificate and was officially declared an archaeologist.
It was an hour full of curiosity, discovery and excitement – and one that passed far too quickly. Experiences like these help spark curiosity, bring history to life and create memories that stay with children long after the activity has ended.
A heartfelt thank you to Bezirksjugendwerk der AWO Unterfranken e.V. for making this special activity possible for the children of Mini Würzburg. Partnerships like these make opportunities to experience archaeology first-hand possible.
