Unearthing the Past: An Archaeological Afternoon at the Museum

On February 18th, at around 2:00 p.m., a convoy of Rubicon/Infra vehicles, braving the elements with the kind of courage that only a true thirst for knowledge can inspire, arrived in the small town of Uffenheim in Middle Franconia.

Their mission? To uncover the knowledge preserved in the display cases filled with archaeological artifacts at the Gollachgaumuseum.

Although modest in size, the museum’s archaeological collection is remarkably diverse, featuring finds from the region’s earliest settlements up to the 19th century. It is housed in the former Upper District Office of Uffenheim, a building constructed in 1698, which was acquired by the city in 1986 and transformed into a museum.

The museum is managed by Heimat- und Museumsverein Uffenheim, a non-profit organization founded in 1913. The association operates throughout the Gollachgau region—between the Steigerwald and the Frankenhöhe— with the aim of preserving local culture, deepening knowledge of it, and promoting its transmission.

Since 2024, the museum has featured a dedicated hall entirely devoted to Neolithic finds. At its center stands the approximately 5,000-year-old Menhir of Gallmersgarten—an impressive testament to the earliest settlement history.

As part of the educational initiatives currently being developed by Rubicon, the museum visit was deliberately chosen for the comprehensive and highly didactic way the exhibition is organized, with European comparisons, reconstructions, and detailed visual representations that make the material both accessible and engaging. The enthusiastic response of approximately 30 participants confirmed outstanding quality of this concept.

A special thanks goes to Mr. Walter Gebert, leading member of the local history association who has devoted many years to supporting the museum, as well as to Mr. Martin Nadler, former representative of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection (BLfD). Both have played a pivotal role in shaping this small gem, the Gollachgaumuseum, and welcomed the “Infra” visitor group warmly and openly.

Our gratitude also extends to the Rubicon management, whose foresight made this project possible, and to our colleague Markus Köllner, who, on a snowy Sunday in January, led a brave advance team for the museum’s first exploration and provided crucial support for organizing the project.
