A Designated Strategic Development Zone on the North Docklands Sewerage Scheme, Dublin

The North Docklands Sewerage scheme consisted of an €18 million upgrade to the wastewater collection network in the North Docklands area replacing the existing wastewater collection network serving the area, which was in excess of 150 years old. This area was designated as a Strategic Development Zone in 2014 and has seen significant development over the past two decades. The newly upgraded wastewater network is capable of handling the fast-growing population of the area and ensures the protection and improvement of water quality in the River Liffey for future years. Archaeological monitoring of all groundworks associated with the project identified the remnants of several 19th century masonry structures including a limestone wall associated with a former patent slip structure beneath the northern extent of a manhole shaft within Dublin Port, at 4m below the existing ground level.
