Variety is the Spice of Hannah’s Work Life
Ask Hannah about her job, and she'll tell you it's never dull. “The sheer variety is great,” she says, listing off a whirlwind of tasks that fill her days. From crafting graphics for excavation sites—like plans and sections—to illustrating fascinating finds, website design, publication layouts, studio photography, survey processing, and even IT troubleshooting, she does it all. One day she’s sorting through layers of data, the next she’s bringing ancient artifacts to life for social media. It’s safe to say that Hannah wears many hats, and she wears them well.

The Journey from Site Assistant to Graphics Geek
Hannah’s archaeology adventure began back in 2006 as a Site Assistant in Galway. Since then, she’s racked up 18 years of experience (yes, she was surprised at that number, too!). Her love for history and insatiable curiosity drove her to a career where every excavation feels like a treasure hunt. "Each new site could be the most amazing one you ever work on," she reflects. That sense of anticipation and discovery keeps her excited about what might be hiding just below the surface.

A Spearhead, a Slice of Career, and a Touch of Luxury
When it comes to career highlights, Hannah recalls a particularly memorable project—the Carlow to Kilcullen Road scheme. This job saw her starting out as a Site Assistant and eventually transitioning into post-excavation and graphics, making it a perfect snapshot of her career progression. One standout memory was uncovering a stunning bronze spearhead at a smaller site designated for a machinery compound. Not only did the team find an incredible artifact, but they also enjoyed some extra comforts: heated huts, plumbed washrooms, and a canteen with hot food—a rare archaeological treat!

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Archaeologists
For those just starting out, Hannah’s advice is simple: "Get as much practical experience as you can. You learn far more by actually doing this job on-site." She encourages young archaeologists to embrace both fieldwork and post-excavation opportunities, be proactive, and always strive to be helpful. It’s a field that rewards hands-on learning and enthusiasm.

A Dream Artefact for the Garden?
If Hannah could claim ownership of any historical piece, she’d typically opt for some Iron Age bling—because who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle? But lately, with a garden to call her own, she’s set her sights on something a bit more unique: the iconic entrance stone from Newgrange, featuring its mesmerizing spiral rock art. Imagine that as a garden centrepiece!

Hannah Sims is not just a key player at Rubicon Heritage; she’s a creative force who seamlessly blends the past with the present, using her skills to make history come alive. So, the next time you see an eye-catching graphic or an engaging social media post from Rubicon or Red River, there’s a good chance that Hannah’s magic touch is behind it!
