During archaeological excavations for the Luas Cross City project, led by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, archaeologists from Rubicon Heritage Services made a remarkable discovery—mass graves containing the remains of over 1,600 victims of Dublin’s devastating 1832 cholera pandemic.

Now, their story is brought to life in Journey to Peace, a powerful new documentary directed and edited by Luke Barry. Cholera swept through Dublin in 1832, leaving thousands dead in its wake. With hospitals overwhelmed and fear gripping the city. Burial sites, hidden beneath the city for nearly two centuries, remained largely forgotten—until the Luas Cross City development unearthed their resting place.
The documentary follows the excavation process, revealing the care and expertise required to recover and analyse the remains. It also chronicles the deeply moving reburial at Glasnevin Cemetery, where these individuals were finally laid to rest with the respect they were once denied.
