Before starting the Graduate Trainee Scheme with Rubicon Heritage, the only experience of archaeology I had outside of a classroom was a two-week field school I participated in during college. I thought that had somehow given me an idea of what working in commercial archaeology would really be like; I was very wrong. I came into the scheme with very little practical experience of what archaeology was like as a profession, but I feel that I have gained so much experience and knowledge in just six short months with the help of all the amazing staff here at Rubicon.

Excitement is building at Rubicon HQ on the imminent publication of another fantastic archaeological book! In 2010 and 2011 Rubicon discovered and excavated 35 archaeological sites along the 13.5 km route of the Tralee bypass. The results of the investigations have revolutionised our understanding of human settlement in the hinterland of Tralee, from early prehistory to modern times. Our forthcoming book documents the vast wealth of archaeological remains unearthed during the project and will provide an opportunity for the wider public to delve into this fascinating story.

December 2018 saw the publication of another massive Rubicon project which was excavated during the road building programme in Ireland during the noughties. The Mullaghmast project was part of the M9 motorway project which connected Waterford and Dublin. Rubicon undertook the excavations on the section from just south of Carlow town to Kilcullen in County Kildare. The Mullamast site was the largest set piece excavation on the scheme and involved the excavation of a section of a deserted medieval village. At the height of the project we employed over 300 archaeologists on the project. The team came from all over the world with 18 languages spoken on site!
