Archaeological Monitoring on the Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project

Rubicon carried out archaeological monitoring at various locations in Malahide town and Dublin City in association with Contracts 2 and 8 of the Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project. The work involved the replacement of the existing watermains on Merrion Road, at locations throughout the historic core of Malahide town and at various locations within the historic core of Dublin city.

The works also took place in close proximity to archaeological sites listed in the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP) and a number of streets within each of the district metered areas were designated conservation areas and architectural conservation areas.

In Malahide two areas of archaeological potential associated with the street layout of former 19th town (cobbled surfaces and associated drains) were identified during the course of the monitoring programme. In the city centre the monitoring programme identified eight 18th century red brick coal cellars on North Great George's Street and two coal cellars on Gardiner Place. These coal cellars are thought to be directly associated with the terrace of Georgian buildings lining these streets and were preserved in situ.
