Cork Public Museum Archive

Cork Public Museum (CPM) holds a significant archaeological archive in storage, acquired over the past sixty years or so. Many of the assemblages are from excavations undertaken prior to the issuing of National Museum of Ireland (NMI) guidelines that seek to standardise the treatment of finds. In recent years, the volume has exceeded capacity in the CPM storage units. Rubicon Heritage was commissioned to carry out the transfer of archive material to the NMI storage facility, contingent on the material meeting the correct archive standards and completion within a strict time frame. This project involved consulting a conservation specialist, assessing each site assemblage and then re-labelling, re-bagging, re-boxing and cataloguing over 80 sites. This resulted in the successful transfer of thousands of artefacts including a whole variety of archaeological finds from stone artefacts, pottery, glass, metal objects to environmental samples and animal bones.
